Turtletown Creek at
dba Turtle Creek Cabins
Turtle Creek Cabins is located in
the Southeast corner of Tennessee in Turtletown. We are two miles west of North
Carolina
and thirteen miles north of Georgia. Turtletown was named after a
Cherokee Indian Chief, Chief Turtle. The Cherokee Indians at one time had camped
along Turtletown Creek which runs along side of Turtle Creek Cabins.
There are scenic waterfalls along Turtletown Creek before it enters the Hiwassee River.
There are several waterfalls in the area. Bald River Falls, Coker Creek Falls as well as Turtletown Creek Falls.
Turtletown is located in the Tennessee Overhill Country. The Tennessee Overhill gets it's name from the designation given to the Overhill Cherokee Towns that were situated "over" the mountains from the Carolina colonies. The Overhill Towns were clustered along the Little Tennessee, Tellico, Hiawassee and Ocoee Rivers in what is today Polk, Monroe, and McMinn Counties.
Other activities in the area include three National Forests, Cherokee National Forest in Tennessee, Nantahala National Forest in North Carolina and the Chattahoochee National Forest in Georgia. Several museums are in the area, railroad, copper mining, Cherokee, textile, and a pioneer museum. You can spend the day at a number of antique shops and craft galleries in the area or visit the flea markets that abound within a fifty mile area.
There is nothing like horseback riding in mountains, let the horse do the walking, riding stables near by. Mountain Bikers will find miles of trails to ride. Take a Glider Ride, or soar in an Ultra Light, pontoon boat, fishing boat or learn to water ski. Hikers can experience the mountains as no where else. If you can't hike or ride a bike you can drive your car on a number of the forestry roads to experience the beauty of the area or take a ride across the Cherohala Skyway between Tellico Plains, Tn. and Robbinsville, N.C. breath taking views rising to over 5300 feet. Or maybe ride the excursion train that runs past the cabins and around the Bald Mountain loop. I am told there are only 2 mountain loops left in the country.
Many people come to the area to pan for gold or look for gem stones in the rivers and creeks, or to gaze at the Stars on a cloudless night.
Be sure to visit Fields of the Woods Biblical Park, or maybe you would like to take a tour of a working hydro electric plant at the Hiwassee Dam. Ride a train from Blue Ridge, Ga. to Macaysville, Ga and back.
If you just want to relax sit back in the rocking chairs on the porch listen to the waterfall below the deck and watch Turtletown Creek flow by.
Let us help make your vacation a memorable one.
There's something for everyone so come and enjoy yourself.
